1 What Job Do You Want To Find Abroad?

There are two main types of jobs abroad available to people with no experience and no degree. These are hospitality work and teaching English as a foreign language. This guide goes over both these options in great detail, explaining exactly how to get a job abroad from someone who has done it themselves…Me!

1 Hospitality Work

Are you after an amazing summer? Then a summer spent working in a bar abroad is for you.

Hospitality work in a foreign country usually means working in a bar, hostel, or hotel. Hospitality work or a hotel jobs are great fun and very sociable. This kind of job abroad is often with accommodation as well.

Getting a job abroad with accommodation means you will save money on accommodation costs. WIN! So, even if the job isn’t that well-paid you will save the extra money that you would have spent renting a room or apartment. Some hospitality work even comes with free food and drink.

Working in hospitality, you can expect your job to involve a lot of partying. It is a great way to meet lots of other young people. I have worked in hostels, bars and restaurants. Personally, I liked working in restaurants the best but everyone is different.

The downsides of hospitality work are that the work is most likely not very well paid and is often reasonable.

This means that your job will only be available during the high seasons, being May-September in Europe and December-March in Latin America.

How To Find Hospitality Work Abroad

The first thing to do is decide on a foreign country you want to move to. Nowadays, if you are looking for work abroad before moving, things are a lot easier (Thank God).

There are websites like Workaway or Hostel Management which list available work exchange opportunities. There is also GoAbroad.com that advertises jobs vacancies abroad WITH accommodation! Available jobs are listed with reviews of the employers from past volunteers and employees.

How To Get Hired Abroad

If you want to learn how to get a job abroad without experience, then you have to be brave!

The best way to find hospitality work is to walk around the resort and introduce yourself to each restaurant, bar or hostel. It can be scary at first but don’t feel afraid.

The thing to remember is that the bar owners are expecting YOU. At the start of every season they are inundated with young people looking for seasonal work!

If you are a shy kind of person, maybe team up with a buddy to look for work.

When you go around from bar to bar, please clean yourself up and look presentable. Imagine you were the owner of a bar, would you want to hire a tidy looking person or a slobby backpacker?

Pro Tip – Print Your Resume

My top tip for finding hospitality work abroad would be to prepare a CV.

Most people don’t bother, but in my experience, bar and restaurant owners always appreciate the touch of professionalism.

A CV helps to show you are a hard worker who will take their summer job seriously.

2 Teaching English Abroad

Teaching English Abroad

The second common option for people looking to find work overseas with no experience is to teach English as a Foreign Language.

When I traveled around Colombia, I fell in love with the country (and salsa dancing) and immediately started looking for a job that would enable me to live there.

After asking around and a bit of research, I found out about a government program employing young graduates to work as English teachers.

The program was hiring hundreds of native English speakers to work as teachers in public high schools across Colombia. The job also came with a well-paid stipend as well as accommodation for the first month.

What followed was the most rewarding job I have ever had. For one year, I taught English As A Second Language to teenagers aged between 11 to 18.

Although, to tell the truth, I am not sure if I was the best English teacher. . .  We spent far too much time playing!

Do Your Research

Teaching English is definitely one of the best ways to get a job abroad without experience.

Depending on the country you choose to work in, you can find well-paid job opportunities abroad teaching English, allowing you to save money or even travel more in your time off!

For instance, in South Korea, you can expect to earn between $2000-3000 USD per month, but you will be expected to work hard for your salary.

While in Latin America, salaries for teaching English are considerably less, probably more around the $1000 mark. The advantage is that you won’t be expected to work as hard in your job.

Therefore, it’s important to do your research on different countries before deciding on where you would like to teach English abroad.

Are you looking for a fun experience, a break from your ‘real-life’? Or are you wanting to start a new career as a teacher abroad? These are the sort of points to consider when researching possible Teaching English jobs in foreign countries.

Where To Teach

Have a look on Facebook as there are often lively expat groups arranging different activities and meetups.

Alternatively, if your aim is to learn a new language then a small town would be ideal.

Living in a small town, you will be immersed in the local language and so you will learn the language a lot quicker.
