2020 is here and if you are a blogger, then you probably know all too well how the Google algorithm seems to be changing every day! How is your blog meant to rank well on Google in the rapidly changing landscape of SEO?
I worked for a London SEO agency for three years (check out these SEO insider secrets.) I learned plenty of SEO tips and tricks in that time. One of the most valuable being where to go for the latest and most reliable SEO news. Therefore, I researched all the most authoritative SEO figureheads and put together the SEO trends for bloggers in 2020.
If you are a beginner blogger who doesn’t have a blog yet, take a look at the How To Start A Blog guide here.
8 SEO Trends In 2020
1 User Experience
More important than ever will be the user experience from an SEO point of view. As a blogger, you need to make sure that every post is able to satisfy these three points.
- Does your post provide a valuable answer to the reader’s question?
- Is your blog easy to navigate and use for any level of user?
- Is your website loading fast enough?
2 Site Speed
In the past, site speed was only a small factor in SEO. But in 2020, I predict this is going to change. According to Google, 53% of visits are abandoned if a mobile site takes longer than three seconds to load.
What’s the easiest way to increase your site speed?
Using a clean, lightweight WordPress theme. I recently made the switch from my slow but pretty Divi theme over to the super lightweight Astra and my organic searches doubled in less than a week.
No one knows for sure what the Google algorithms are but one things for sure. In 2020, site speed matters. All bloggers need to be using fast WordPress themes if they are serious about SEO.
3 H2 Headings
A clear theme emerging in the SEO world is the short attention span of internet users. What does this mean for bloggers? People aren’t reading your content, they skim.
Your H2 Headings need to explain what the blog post is about and give a summary of the whole article. Whatsmore, H2 Headings are used by Google to work out what the content is about as well.
Another reason to maximize on your H2 headings and use them to explain a blog post is for advertising revenue. If you generate income from your blog with adverts, then having informative H2 headings will encourage readers to spend longer on your posts, increasing your RPM.
4 Video On Your Blogs
I really didn’t want to include this in the top SEO trends for 2020 as I am not a fan of video content. But, statistics don’t lie and in 2020, video content will be more important than ever.
Recent research by Forrester consultancy firm, video is 50 times more likely to show up on the first page of Google search results than a web page with plain text. What’s more, according to Marketing Land research 62% of Google universal searches include video.
As a blogger, this means you need to think seriously about creating YouTube videos and embedding them in blog posts.
5 Featured snippets
Featured snippets aren’t new in the SEO world but they are continuing to be important.
If you are a beginner blogger, then you might be confused about what featured snippets are. I would recommend you to have a read of Search Engine Watch’s guide to get you started and boost your blog posts in Google’s ranking.
6 Long-Form Content
This seems contradictory to the previous SEO 2020 trends about Google users having shorter attention spans and not reading. But unfortunately, content creators have to give what Google wants.
Google’s best practices guidelines for SEO consistently states that long-form, informative content is what ranks best in search results for SEO. I believe this to be because long-form content is likely to be of a higher quality and has more information. Therefore providing more value to the reader.
How Long Is Long Form?
Long-form content is generally considered to be anything over 1000 words. I try to aim for 2000 words, although for an ultimate guide, you want to be reaching 3000+ words!
In 2019, over 4.4 million blog posts were published every day. And the majority of these blogs are using the same stock images found on free websites.
Looking at it from this angle, you can see the importance of using original photos and how it ties into SEO.
If you want your blog to stand out from the crowd and start ranking on Google with SEO then you need to be using your own photos in 2020.
You don’t need to become the next Mario Testino for your blog. Your smartphone will be more than enough to take decent photos and then edit them using a free tool like Canva. Another option would be to start creating your own designs and graphics instead of using photos.
Make sure the photos you use are all served in Next Gen format, if you don’t know what that is, then there are plenty of WordPress plugins like Optimole to help.
AI is only becoming more powerful in 2020 and that is moving into the way we search for things on Google. If you run a recipe or health and fitness blog, then you seriously need to be considering how best to optimize your site for SEO.
