Once you decide to start a side hustle (probably after reading this list), you won’t look back.
Having a side hustle is a great way to earn extra money to pay off your debt, protect against financial emergencies (Covid-19…), increase your retirement fund.
It’s the first step in breaking free from your regular life that’s been holding you back. Imagine if you start your new blog today, two years down the line you can quit your office job and travel the world!
Here is a list of the 9 best side hustle ideas for 2020.
We tried hard to find the best side hustles that had a balance of a high earning potential, work-life balance and ability to scale!
Best Side Hustle Ideas You Can Start Today
1. Start A Money Making Blog
Blogging is always going to be number one on my list because it has the highest earning potential with a very low entry cost. There are bloggers who make tens of thousands of dollars a month from blogs that they started less than two years ago.
However, these bloggers are the exception. What’s more common is the hundreds of thousands of bloggers who start niche sites and earn between $1000-5000 regularly from ad income and affiliate sales.

2. Teach English Online
If you’re stuck at home in isolation at the moment because of Covid-19 and you’re in desperate need of cash, then this one is for you. Teaching English online via video calls is a really popular way for lots of people to make money as a side hustle.
There are various companies that are regularly hiring, but probably the most well-known is VIPKID. They are a large company so constantly need new teachers. You teach English to children in China, and I’ve had plenty of friends who have done this work and really enjoyed it!
If you are a native English speaker with a bachelor’s degree then this is a great side hustle idea for you. You don’t even need to have prior experience teaching English.
The pay for teaching English online varies between $14-22 per hour. This depends on a few factors, such as experience, education, monthly targets and performance.
3. Become a Virtual Assistant
When I first started working remotely, I was working as a virtual assistant. The pay is decent, starting at about $15 per hour for newer assistants and rising to $25 per hour for more established assistants. You can make up to $50 per hour when you have experience and are specialised in desirable skills.
Apart from the good money, the virtual assistant side hustle is a winner because of the great work-life balance. It’s the perfect part-time gig to fit around your other commitments such as work, college or childcare.
Most clients are flexible, setting you tasks and then letting you get on with the work in your own time. As long as you deliver before the deadline, your client will be happy. That means you can work from home, in the library between classes or in a coffee shop while you wait to pick up your kids.
I wrote a detailed guide on how to become a virtual assistant even if you have no experience to get you started!
4. Freelancing On Upwork
A lot of people get nervous when it comes to applying for freelance jobs on online platforms such as Upwork, but there really is no need. The world is changing and Upwork is becoming a really popular way for both large and small companies to find freelancers to get quick jobs done.
If you’re a creative type, then a fab side hustle idea could be a social media content designer. Helping people put together Instagram story templates and posts on their feed. There are plenty of free tools like Canva to help you do this, so you don’t even need any money to get started with this.
The first step to winning freelance work on Upwork is designing a winning profile, have a read of this detailed guide on how to create the perfect Upwork profile (using my own profile as the example.)
5. Flip Clothes On Ebay/Poshmark/Depop/Etsy
This is another fantastic side hustle idea for anyone from college students to busy office girls.
Flipping clothes is when you either sell your old clothes you have lying around the house or you go into thrift stores searching for bargains and resell them online for a profit via Ebay or a clothing app such as Poshmark.
My sister actually flips clothes as her full-time job now, she’s been doing it for nearly two years now and loves being her own boss. She started on eBay but recently set up a Shopify store so that she gets to keep more of the profits and not pay a commission to eBay.
This side hustle idea can really be scaled up as well, so although you might start off only flipping clothes on the weekends, after a few months, you could very well have your own successful business flipping clothes full-time!
6. Pinterest Manager
This might sound like it’s a made up side-hustle gig, but I assure you, in 2020, there is a real need for Pinterest managers!
Lots of bloggers, when they become successful start to outsource admin tasks, and one of these tasks is managing Pinterest. Working as a Pinterest manager involves scheduling pins, creating new content, monitoring results.
You could earn between $15-30 per hour, and if you have a few clients on your roster then this side hustle could turn out to be very lucrative!
To get started learning all about how to master Pinterest, I would recommend taking the affordable course offered by Pinterest Pro, Elle Duclos.
7. Walking Dogs
This is such a classic on any list of side hustle jobs that I had to include it. Walking dogs is a great way to make some extra cash on the side without having to spend any money getting started. It’s also a great way to get in some extra exercise and meet new people.
If you’re a busy college student who doesn’t have time to work out and a part-time job then side hustle idea is the perfect way to combine the two!
8. Start An Online Store
It’s official, ecommerce is the future. It’s never been easier to launch an online store with the help of Shopify or WooCommerce plugins.
Shopify offers free trials so there’s no risk if you decide to give it a go.
Building a website is actually a lot easier than it sounds, check out this free guide on how to build a website. And now, the technical side of things is no longer so complicated… what are you waiting for?
If you’re creative, then you could start making handmade earrings or jewelry to sell. Or perhaps, you could have a personalised greeting card website, where you mail on the greeting cards to the recipient.
Think outside the box with this side hustle idea and let your dreams run wild!
9. Create A Digital Product
Running with the creative theme, digital products are becoming more and more common. There are tonnes of Shopify stores where people make full-time incomes from selling downloadable printable calendars and planners!
Even though the calendars only sell for $5 or so, if you sell enough of them, then you are in the money! And of course, because it’s all digital, the production costs are zero!
