SafetyWing - Travel Insurance For When Already Abroad!

This is my review of SafetyWing health insurance. I am a customer of SafetyWing and used them to purchase travel insurance when I was already abroad, but I am also an affiliate. This means that if you choose to use SafetyWing through my link then I will earn a small commission. Win/Win!

SafetyWing Travel Insurance Review

One of the highlights of being a digital nomad is the lack of responsibilities and bills. Being a digital nomad means you don’t have a fixed address. There is no monthly rent, car payments or electricity bills to think about.

It’s a wonderful feeling to be free from traditional constraints. But one thing that seems out of date still is the old-fashioned insurance providers. Times are changing, digital nomads are on the rise and travel insurance should reflect that!

Enter SafetyWing! The best travel insurance for digital nomads in 2020.

Can I Buy Travel Insurance When Already Abroad?

The thing about long-term travel is that you often don’t know how long you’re going to be away for. Before I found SafetyWing, I was constantly buying health insurance for three months and then finding myself still abroad but without any cover!

*Cue me, frantically scrabbling away on Google trying to buy travel insurance for people already overseas.*

It was a nightmare.

And each time I bought new travel insurance, it seemed to get more and more expensive.

Then I found SafetyWing. If you’re currently abroad and you need to buy travel insurance, then SafetyWing is the answer.

SafetyWing Review

At only $37/month, SafetyWing is one of the cheapest and best travel insurance providers out there in 2020.

SafetyWing came about as a solution of finding medical insurance for long-term digital nomads, but it is also a great option for long-term backpackers with no fixed end date.

You can purchase a fixed plan OR a rolling subscription. The rolling policy option is a lifesaver. Allowing you to work and travel without an end date.

Finally! No more having to constantly renew every few months!

SafetyWing allows you to buy travel insurance even when already abroad and is one of the cheapest and best providers out there.

Best (And Cheapest) Travel Insurance

The standout features of SafetyWing for me are the low cost and the subscription option.

If you are between 18-39 then for $37/month you are covered worldwide (excluding USA) for however long you want!

Another thing I love is that there is only one policy.

You don’t have to pull up a million tabs, trying to compare between LuckyLife and TrickyTravel, trying to work out what all the fancy insurance jargon even means!

With SafetyWing, there is one easy to understand insurance policy for everyone.

There’s only one deductible per year. If you need to make a claim then it is a flat fee ductible of $250.

And then the great thing is that if you need to make a second claim within a year, you don’t pay any extra, that first $250 deductible will cover it!

To sign up to SafetyWing you don’t even need proof of residency from your home country, or anywhere else actually.

SafetyWing has been designed to be super easy and hassle free.

P.S. If you are customer for a certain period then you’ll get extra benefits like being covered for 30 days in your home country for every 90 days of coverage abroad (15 days if you’re from the US).

One Of The Best Travel Insurance Providers

SafetyWing was created by people who already work remotely, long-term travelers.

Many of the team are digital nomads, and this shows on the website. They are an up to date insurance provider. Times are changing, digital nomads are on the rise and insurance should reflect that!

It’s super simple to use and all the information is easy to understand.

They know what digital nomads need,

With SafetyWing, all the important bases are covered.

So, What’s Included?

  • Emergency Medical Treatment
  • Medical Expenses
  • Lost Checked Luggage
  • Travel Delay
  • Trip Interruption
  • Emergency Dental Costs
  • Hospital Expenses (Room and Board)
  • Family Member Transport (If you have an extended hospital stay, they bring a family member to you)
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation
  • Natural Disaster Accommodation

As you can see, they have thought of pretty much everything!

They also cover all the typical sports and activities. At the moment, they don’t cover some of the more extreme activities like white water rafting, but they are looking to include these in the future.

They also hope to improve their policy by having zero deductible and raising the coverage to $1 million USD!

Easy To Use

I have been recommending SafetyWing to fellow digital nomads and so far, I’ve only heard good reviews 🙂

The website is so easy to use and I really like how easy it is to understand SafetyWing’s policies. They explain the policy really well on the website and make sure you understand what is covered and what isn’t covered.

Luckily, I haven’t yet had to make a claim but looking over their policy, they seem very fair with a straightforward process.

All you need to do is send your claim to the email address provided. Then within 24 hours you’ll have a confirmation from SafetyWing that your claim is being reviewed.

Once your claim is being reviewed, you can visit the Claims section of the website to see live status updates. This feature seems like a nice touch and allows you to feel more in control, a nice change from the old-fashioned insurance providers.

Is Travel Insurance Worth It?

Buying health insurance isn’t a fun thing to buy like new bikinis or a cool digital camera, but you do need it.

Travel insurance is a necessary expense if you are going backpacking. There’s no way around it.

You need to know that in the event of a medical emergency, you’ll be covered.

However, with SafetyWing’s subscription pay monthly policy, you can avoid paying unnecessary money.

Imagine if you buy a twelve month policy and then you come home after six months?!  (Full disclosure – I’ve definitely done this in the past. *Facepalm*)

Also, if you are looking to buy travel insurance when already abroad, then SafetyWing can’t be beaten. They saved my arse this year that’s for sure!
